After all the commotion, the apologies, and the rumors, it looks like the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez are moments away from a new deal. The New York Times is reporting that Steinbrenner senior’s lackeys are closing in on the final touches of a 10 year, $270million dollar deal that will still make him the highest paid ballplayer in the bigs. A-Rod has been meeting with the Yankees since Monday without agent Scott Boras.
“Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees’ ownership,” [Rodriguez] said. “We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.”
270 million types of happiness. A-Rod was surely suckered in by the fact he wasn’t booed all year. Notoriously critical New York fans were only sporadically fickle this year towards A-Rod, even though he continued to suck in October. But there’s still a bit of apprehension from the Steinbrenner kids, who were enthused about the recent negotiations.
“Things are moving along, and we’ll see how it goes,” Hank Steinbrenner said in an interview late last night. “Everyone seems to be pleased about it. I’m certainly pleased. Despite some cynical attitudes there may be over the next few weeks, Alex genuinely does not want to leave the team, and you really can’t blame him, because we’ve got the talent to win…The bottom line is, I’m going to go as far as I want to go, regardless of who’s in the room. It’s no different than bidding on a racehorse at an auction. ”
And it’s A-Rod by a nose! Suckers.
