Competitive marathon racing has seen a sharp increase in participation from Americans over the last few years. But we really have nothing to show for it. The medals are scarce, top-ranked runners are almost non-existent and we seem to participate only to get rid of our lonjas–and that hasn’t worked too well. It isn’t like in the 80’s when three-time New York Marathon winner Alberto Salazar (pictured left) would astonish crowds by leaving everyone in the dust. Back then people actually ran for fun and passion. Go figure. So what exactly is the problem? According to New York Times writer John Brant:
[...]I f you didn’t go out hard and fast it didn’t count. As that maxim faded away and more people joined the sport for fitness, the middle and back of the pack swelled. Fewer Americans competed near the elite level [...] diminishing the chances of a breakout athlete emerging.
Hear that health freaks? If you’re not in it to win it, then you’re just making yourself look like an ass.
