We would have loved to have seen yesterday’s agenda for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown:
9 AM: Devise plan for making the English Premier League more English.
Later: Try to figure out that Iraqi thing if there’s time.
Yes, it seems that Sir Alex’s pleas have made it all the way to the British government, and now they’re trying to find ways to strengthen the national team by putting more countrymen in the EPL, even if that means potentially kicking out some of the best players in the world.
Discussions have begun with senior advisers to the prime minister and James Purnell, the culture secretary, to try to develop a consensual “British solution” to the apparent decline in the number of British and Irish players in the nation’s top sides. The Premier League is acutely aware of the criticism that will flow its way over the issue if England fail to qualify for Euro 2008.
Doesn’t England have soccer schools and academies for their Under-21 teams? Instead of picking on the foreigners, why don’t they look into bettering those first? Either that or get a communal restraining order for soccer players against Ricky Hatton.
