Club América beat Millonarios from Colombia 3-2 earlier today in the first leg of semi-final Copa Sudamericana action. You didn’t think we just watched Champions’ League did you? América will head home with a comfortable aggregate lead, but they won’t be relishing in the backdrop of the Azteca. It’s not because of previous fan violence or unavailable seating. Nope. The Azteca won’t be available because it has been booked for November 13th–the same day of the second leg of semifinals–for the last two months. The president’s daughter having a quinceañera or something? We don’t even know if he has a daughter, but how the hell can a stadium overlook the possibility of their team playing a midweek tournament game in only the biggest club tournament in South America? Oh, right, América doesn’t own the stadium.

“Azteca Stadium, independent from the club, was contracted to host a private event two months ago. Yet as soon as word came about the date of the match, the stadium was intent on finding a compromise with Club América.”

So they moved the game to Estadio Nemesio Díez, home of Mexican League club Toluca. With a capacity of 27,000, we’re sure the 90 ,000 + that regularly attend Aguila madness will be content. Let us hope they tested out the guardrails.
