England Counting On Foreigners To Save Their Euro 2008 Dreams. Yeah, Crazy.

First it was the Liverpool’s boys asking their Israeli buddy for some help. Now Chelsea players are feeling the desperation. Chelsea defender and Israeli national player Tal Ben Haim (pictured right) has been ordered asked by his English teammates for a little help this weekend. If Israel beats Russia, then England have a better chance of qualifying.

Ben Haim revealed how several Chelsea and England stars have asked him to “do us a favour” and get a result against Russia, opening the door once again for England to qualify for the Euro 2008 tournament in Switzerland and Austria.
“The last few weeks in training have been full of talk about the Russia game. The England lads have been piling the pressure about Israel getting the result that will help them out.”

The irony here is that England’s captain–among others–has implied that foreigners like Ben Haim should be withheld from consistent participation in the domestic league. No worries. Another Englander said that was all bullocks. Ben Haim was assured by English mate Joe Cole that he’d get a special prize if he’d help the Brits out.

“ Joe has said I can choose a holiday if we can beat Russia – I’m not sure if he is kidding on me but it would be nice to find out.
“I can assure England fans that Israel will give one hundred per cent, we want to win the game and if it helps England qualify then great, make no mistake, we will give everything in this game.”

In Spain they call this the myth of the maletin. Basically, towards the end of the season, the team at the top of the tables will offer the teams at the bottom of the tables extra incentive (mula) to beat the team that’s competing with them for the domestic league title. Maybe what Cole means is that Ben Haim will take a permanent holiday from the Premiership if Israel walk away with no points.
