You have to admit that a Euro 2008 tournament without England would be like a World Cup tournament without Brazil. Well, everyone, prepare for it. England head coach Steve Mclaren thought he bulked up on experience by recalling Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham, and though we won’t write them off completely (we’re 97% there), a shot at winning just got harder for England. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney injured his ankle today and will be out for a month. Tissue anyone?

“It is hugely disappointing for us and him.
“Given the form he has been in and the contribution he has made to England over the last two games means it is a blow. But we have to deal with it, like we have dealt with situations like these before. It is an opportunity for someone else to come and do a job.”

Oh, pardon. Can you just step aside a second. We have to set up the guillotine for next week’s beheading.
