How would you like Aston Villa V Real Madrid in the Champions’ League? Or maybe Wigan Athletic V AC Milan? If Uefa President Michel Platini had his way then Liverpool’s new scoring record would be up for grabs every year. It would have been a treat to possibly see a European giant toppled by a lesser team, but we have Chelsea FC to deliver that for us this year. The overall purpose of Platini’s new Uefa plan would have allowed for weaker teams into Champions’ League competition to come in via domestic cup competitions: i.e. FA Cup winner’s in England, Copa del Rey in Spain, etc. The top clubs of Europe weren’t having any of that nonsense–specifically England–and a BBC sports editor said it best:

“Platini wanted the new club champions to come in from the less privileged parts of Europe. He has got that part of the plan through, six new clubs will come in. But the other part of the proposal, which involved the Cup winners, has been completely abandoned. The Premier League has won a thumping victory over Platini.”

Note to the world: Don’t bloody get into a spat with England, or else. Reminds us of the time we were cornered by some English rugby players in a pub in Spain and ordered to guzzle a pint in less than a minute.
