So how the hell does that saying go: you can sheer a sheep many times, but only skin him once? Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber thinks we’re all freakin’ sheep. We all know David Beckham’s inaugural year was far from extraordinary. The Los Angeles Galaxy failed to make the playoffs, Beckham only played five games and his hype became as transparent as his wife’s talent. Yet, commissioner Garber thinks Beck’s first round of MLS action was something to be admired and commended. Um, what?
“The signing of David Beckham delivered on our expectations in every measure,” Garber said. “The exposure we got because of David Beckham, regardless of how many games he played, was fantastic.”
We all knew they were acquiring his star power to sell more jerseys. Real Madrid did the same thing. But it sounds like the league didn’t even bet he’d play or something.
Beckham’s absence deflated the huge sense of anticipation about his arrival, but Garber is confident the buzz will return when a healthy Beckham takes to the field in 2008.
“He can have his freshman year in his sophomore year. The way we look at it, we’re going to have the first year all over again, and maybe that’s a good thing.”
If England advance to Euro 2008 finals and Beckham is picked up, what will the league have to tell us then? Oh, right, it’s a great honor to have some MLS dude playing for an overrated national team.
