First there was Russian billionaire, and EPL’s Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich offering a million dollars to Russian players if they beat England during the first round of the Euro 08 qualifiers. Then we had this whole Alisher and the KGB, rape and owning Arsenal mess.
Now, Leonid Fedun—oil baron and owner of the Russian Premier League team Spartak Moscow—is offering the Croatian team’s top four players cars as incentive to beat England in their Euro 08 qualifier tomorrow. Why? Because the mother country’s team blew its destiny by losing to Israel last weekend, and it needs a Croat win to advance in the tournament. Jesus, what is this, college football?
Fedun said he simply wanted to boost Croatia’s morale by offering their goalkeeper and the top three field players each a Mercedes. Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa plays for Spartak.
“I’m doing this strictly as a fan,” Fedun was quoted as saying by the Russian media.”If we have even a small chance we must try to use it.”
This isn’t the first time Fedun has given a car away to a goalie. When his club came in second in the Russian championship, Fedun gave his keeper a Hummer H2. We imagine if they won the whole thing, he would’ve gotten his own oil well, too.
