In an announcement that sent shivers through English Premier League locker rooms, U.K. Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said soccer players are making too much money, and that regular fans are getting shut out. Upset at the notion, many EPL players shook their heads as they left practice in their gold-plated Bentleys.
“Good luck to John Terry but I think it is obscene to be on 150,000 pounds per week,” [Sutcliffe] told a sports industry conference on Thursday. “Chelsea are 250 million pounds in the red and they may be able to cope with that but it’s not the real world.”
Bad example, Gerry. When you’ve got a Russian oil tycoon covering the bill, money’s not an issue. Only thing that matters is winning. And when you’re winning, fans don’t mind having to shell out the bucks to see you play or wear your scarf. Did we mention that winning is the most important thing?
