In a move that would make ancient Romans proud, the city of Vancouver is considering legalizing “co-op” brothels for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The thinking behind it is that a brothel run by prostitutes will provide a safer working environment for the ladies of the night. Oh no, self-empowerment at the Olympics? Don’t tell the figure skaters whose coaches keep them at 4′11″ and 100 pounds.
The group has support from some politicians, including Vancouver East MP Libby Davies and Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, who believe a brothel owned and run by sex-trade workers would help reduce violence against them.
[Davis] said the group won’t open the facility, complete with “quickie rooms” equipped with sinks and a bench, unless it has support from the federal government.
In the spirit of the games, we believe that the “quickie rooms” should have an official timer and medals handed out for the truly quick. It’d be much more interesting than having to sit through a curling match.
