A lot of people wonder what they would do if they’d owned a sports franchise, but a group of fans in England actually went out and bought an ownership stake in a club. Ebbsfleet United, of the Blue Square Premier League, is now 51% owned by a conglomerate group of cybergeeks from MyFootballClub.com.
The 20,000 MyFootballClub members have each paid £35 to provide a £700,000 takeover pot and they will all own an equal share in the club. Members will have a vote on transfers as well as player selection and all major decisions.
OK, a website buys a team. Hmm. Starting tomorrow, we’re passing around the plate to see if anyone wants to buy the Columbus Crew. We’ve got $335, so we’re figuring we’d still need another $165. We think the MachoChip Crew has a nice ring to it. We’ll have jerseys and everything.
