You didn’t think we’d go a whole 24 hours without covering some sort of soccer scandal, did you? El Nuevo Herald reports that the 1978 Peruvian National Soccer team was bribed by coke mongers from Colombia, which inevitably led to the Argentine’s winning the whole shabang…and Diego Maradona becoming a crack head. The latter probably would of happened anyway.
The son of a Colombian drug trafficker is alleging that narco-money was used to bribe Peruvian soccer players in a 1978 match against military-ruled Argentina that eventually allowed the Argentine squad to win the World Cup.
”We knew first-hand how the Argentina-Peru match went. My uncle Miguel spoke with an important personality from the soccer world and confessed everything related to the money,” Fernando Rodríguez Mondragón told Radio Caracol in an interview to promote his new book.
Peru’s 6-0 loss immediately sparked conspiracy theories at the time of the game in 1978. Argentina needed to beat Peru by four goals to edge out Brazil for the final spot in the semifinals.
Ah yes, how could we ever forget the “Snort Of God.” We just purchased our ticket to hell.
