The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the UCLA Bruins have finally cut Karl Dorrell loose from their program after five years as head coach. Wait. This isn’t news. It’s like telling us TMZ will probably report on Britney Spears tomorrow. We smelled this as far back as the Notre Dame game after UCLA provided “The Fighting Irish” with their first taste of victory. And then losing to Arizona? What are they, USC? It’s probably worse than that Stanford loss. UCLA Athletic director Dan Guerrero broke the news:
“This was a very difficult decision for me,” UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said in a statement. “Karl has represented this program with dignity and class. He is a true Bruin and I respect what he has accomplished in his five years as our head coach, particularly off the field. But, at the end of the day, the focus has to be on results and I felt that a change was in the best interest for the future of our program.”
Winning is a great attitude to have when your advertising those UCLA banners that read “100 NCAA Titles” on your campus. And when your rival has spanked the daylights out of you seven out of the last eight years, it’s good to know UCLA’s thinking ahead. Well, Dorrell was more than grateful for the chance to get his ass beat on a regular basis.
“I want to thank Dan Guerrero for the opportunity to coach at my alma mater,” Dorrell said in a statement. “I know that the program is in much better shape than when I inherited it and I believe that it is ready to flourish.
“I am proud of what the program accomplished during my five years, especially in the areas of academics, citizenship and recruiting. I think a great foundation has been laid and I will be pulling for the young men I recruited into the program to be successful in the future.”
Former Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci is already been rumored to be the front-runner; and that means Pete Carroll may have to split his “NFL dunce/College football god” title.
