The man in this picture is DeWayne Walker, and he’s not going to be the next head football coach at UCLA. But it has nothing to do with the fact that A) he just lost the Las Vegas Bowl because his team had their last-second field goal attempt blocked or B) he didn’t reign in his players for said game, letting them enjoy everything Vegas has to offer. The reason Walker is not going to be the next coach is because, as LA Times columnist T.J. Simers puts it, Walker doesn’t have million-dollar backers in his pockets like interviewed candidate Rick Neuheisel does.

“The way the story is told, Neuheisel met with the UCLA chancellor and told him he would keep Walker, hire Norm Chow and he would have one of his former fraternity brothers, who is rich now, pay for their salaries.”

“He also said he could produce four different donors, each giving $1 million for the Pauley Pavilion makeover, and no question, ‘Slick Rick’ still has it.”

That’s pretty bad, but at least he didn’t ditch his team during the first season like Bobby Petrino. We’d take Mr. Deep Pockets over him any day. At least he’s got something (literally) invested in the job.
