There has sure been a lot of baseball news considering the season’s been shelved since October. The latest concerns Johan Santana’s bid to be the next [blank] pitcher. That’s right. No one has made a viable move for the Twins’ ace and the most recent quitter was none other than those rich bastards in pinstripes: the New York Yankees.

The Yankees’ pursuit of Johan Santana is over, according to Hank Steinbrenner[...] “There were a lot of factors involved, including money” to explain why the Yankees dropped their pursuit of Santana. The Yankees already have the majors’ highest payroll, and Santana probably would have cost at least $20 million a year. Already this off-season, the Yankees have reached agreements to re-sign Pettitte, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, who will make more than $70 million combined next season. With Pettitte back, adding Santana was less appealing, considering the cost in players and money.

Now, come on. Another $20 million a year is totally affordable. The Yanks will make that back by July! Seriously, what’s the hold up Steinbrenner?

But Steinbrenner said he would continue to “pour as much money as possible” into scouting, the draft and Latin America, and he emphasized that he was excited about the Yankees’ young pitching

That’s absurd. With the government holding onto green cards tighter than Mariano Rivera’s record, it’ll probably cost more to bribe officials to allow those Latin Americans to play. Right? Right.
