Teofilo Stevenson, the head of the Cuban Boxing Federation and an icon in his own right, declared yesterday that two countrymen pugilists, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara, should be able to fight again for their flag. What are the crimes–other than having ridiculously awesome names–that made Fidel strip them of the right to fight for Cuba? Well, they’re Cuban, so you might have guessed they tried to defect while at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil this past year.
Three-time Olympic champion Teofilo Stevenson said two Cuban boxers deserved a second chance after they deserted their team during the Pan American Games and were barred from fighting for their country by Fidel Castro.
“In our country there is a system of re-education that can be applied to those who commit an error or have flaws,” he said. “The only ones you can’t pardon are traitors.”
Terrell Owens should thank his lucky stars this country doesn’t have that policy or he might be on his way to Cuba to a little place called Guantanamo.
