Martin Galvan, a 14 year old addition to Cruz Azul’s roster, trotted onto the pitch in the 85th minute of “The Cementeros” match against Monterrey. He became the youngest player to take part in an Interliga match, having discarded his diapers prior to halftime and removed training wheels from his bike the previous day. Well, the latter may be spiteful and untrue, but that’s because we’re envious of the kid. Galvan’s feat reminds us of the time we hated that 12 year old kid for trademarking his easy-to-read guitar fretting guides and making millions. Interliga’s reporting website declared Galvan’s substitution in the Saturday match against Monterrey overshadowed Cruz Azul’s first, ever win in the tournament.
Galvan, who has impressed, showed strong ball skills, decent ideas and plenty of energy in nearly nine minutes on the field, but he was easily bodied off the ball by Monterrey’s bigger, more experienced defenders.
We had the same experience when we were drinking with the older kids our Freshman year of high school. Frankly: is this too much hype for a kid who was seen training with the national team at age 12, or is this the new face of Mexico’s World Cup bid for 2010? The comments look lonely so speak up.
