KFC Uerdingen, a German soccer club with no affiliation to the fried chicken empire, is in a deep financial crisis. The club’s 20 year plummet in the Bundesliga (they now play in the “regional fourth division”) has decreased revenues by, well, a lot, and has left the club on the fringe of bankruptcy. Ever so clever, KFC Uerdingen officials placed their head coaching position on eBay, attempting to solve their financial woes via overzealous fans; if they exist.
The club says on its internet site the successful bidder will experience the full range of coaching duties for 24 hours, including the team’s final training session, the tactical team talk and immediate dismissal after the game.
It’s not the first time the club has looked for original ways to raise money.
Two years ago, a 33-year-old insurance salesman was able to buy a place in the squad and played for three minutes in a friendly against Bayern Munich.
We did a search for the listing, but found nothing. We’ve got a hunch Jose Mourinho threw in a bid just in case he needed to shed some coaching rust. We would have made a bid, and had we won, there would have recruited her for the day and Warsteiner Dunkel would have been served after practice. It’s the only way we know how to roll.
