(UPDATE: It turns out the editor, Dave Seanor, has been “replaced.”)
In a move that probably won’t lead to the American Society of Magazine Editors award for cover of the year, Golfweek has decided to illustrate Kelly Tilghman’s Tiger Woods lynch remarks with a noose on its latest cover. Whew. We thought it was about Jason Day, the latest wonder from down under, killing himself. That’s a relief.

The cover line reads: “Caught in a Noose: Tilghman slips up, and Golf Channel can’t wriggle free,” and points readers to a special report by the weekly magazine.

Dave Seanor, the editor, said the intention was not to be “racially provocative,” but to illustrate a noose tightening around Tilghman, the Golf Channel and golf. He said: “There weren’t a lot of other ideas for the cover; either you put Kelly out there or this image, which is emblematic of what this controversy is about.”

We had a friend once photoshop our face onto a picture of Kirk Gibson’s ‘88 World Series trot, so why don’t you just have Kelly Tilghman photoshopped into a KKK uniform? Or how about Tiger kicking the crap out of Tilghman… no, that goes into another territory we don’t want to venture in. Best to stick with the Klan outfit. It’s no less subtle than what you got there, Dave.
