Interliga 2008 commenced yesterday! If you’re wondering what the heck this tourney is, then be bewildered no longer. Mexico’s Interliga competition is an off-season tournament intended to determine which Mexican clubs (two three) will compete in the Copa Libertadores tournament in 2008. The top eight Mexican clubs from the Apertura and Clausura tournaments in Mexico are the teams that qualify for the, um, qualifying tournament. It’s that simple.
And yesterday the whole shabang got down in Frisco, Texas with Monterrey putting on a pitiful performance against a meager Pumas team. Newly pinstriped Jared Borgetti made his Monterrey debut against the Pumas and was rather impressed with his new team, their close loss and their slow, but escalating progress.
“We’re really calm. We’re progressing fine. Ahí vamos!”
Optimism at it’s finest. Basically, Monterrey & Company aren’t taking this too serious because everyone knows the teams to advance will be be America/Guadalajara and the team that upsets either America, or Guadalajara; which will be Toluca this year. Peep the full schedule of the Interliga 2008 tourney after the jump.
