Lost in most of the hub-bub of whether Johan Santana will end up with the Yankees or the Red Sox has been the fact that the New York Metropolitans have also thrown their hat in the ring. While going to the National League would certainly be a boon to Santana’s numbers (he has to face the pitcher, not the DH), some aren’t so sure the Mets need Johan to win it all. Well, one guy, anyway—Carlos Delgado. One lonely, craaazy guy.

The Mets have been criticized in some circles for having a tepid season around the hot stove, but count Carlos Delgado among those who believe the team can win as is.

Still, Delgado said, he’d welcome Johan Santana, if the Mets can pull off a trade for the Minnesota ace.

“I’m not Omar (Minaya, the GM) here, but if we can get him for the right price, I think it’d be great,” Delgado said in a conference call on Thursday. “I never use the word need, because we don’t need anything but oxygen. But it would be nice to have a guy like Johan Santana. A guy (of) that caliber helps your team.”

Gee, you think, Carlos? Your Mets missed the playoffs after leading the NL East for most of the season because their team ERA down the stretch was third worst in the league. Would you pay $20 million a year to prevent that from happening? Yeah, us too.
