Johan’s Hundred Million Dollar Dream: Maybe The Twins Know What They’re Doing

While everyone tries to figure out where Johan Santana will end up, not many people care what happens to his current team, the Minnesota Twins. It’s generally agreed that whatever package of players they receive for the pitcher will never equal what they’re giving up. But few remember that Minnesota has been down this road before, once making a deal so lopsided in their favor that it ended up crippling the other team’s pitching staff. But then again, they also let David Ortiz walk, so at least they’re trying to get something.
The end result might leave some Twins fans gasping for breath… It’s possible the Twins will trade Santana without landing one player who is universally recognized as a big help in 2008.
Time will be the true judge. In 2003, some thought the Twins were fleeced when they sent A.J. Pierzynski to the Giants for Joe Nathan, Boof Bonser and Francisco Liriano.
That day, Giants GM Brian Sabean said, “It’s not often that you can send a reliever and two unproven prospects for a front-line, lefthanded-hitting All-Star catcher.”
It turns out Sabean gave up a Rookie of the Year (Liriano), All-Star reliever (Nathan) and strong third in the rotation pitcher (Bonser). There’s a reason Pierzynski won a championship… with the White Sox.
