MLS Rumor Mill: Luis Figo’s Declining Career Headed Down The Drain To The United States?

Luis Figo suffered a knee injury a few months back and has been out of commission for Serie A club Inter Milan. The Portuguese international is nearing 35, so his rehabilitation has been sluggish. He probably doesn’t have too much of a career left after this (is that too dismissive? Nah.), so he’s decided the next best place to ride his reputation could be the MLS. Cue the premature confetti and jersey sales. You don’t even need a team either. Just grab a generic, white jersey, plaster MLS logos on it, and smack Figo’s name on the back. It’ll sell like hotcakes, man. Hotcakes!
[Correio da Manha] assures that Figo would receive close to seven million Euros for two seasons and the central midfielder could be transferred to the Chicago Fire, Houston Dynamo or the Los Angeles Galaxy, which are all owned by AEG.
This sounds like every other rumor we’ve heard in the last 12 months. Shall we take a tally? Yes. There’s been Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, the fat Ronaldo and even ex-Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho was linked to a “possible” move to the US. He’s not a player, but a wacko like him may have burned enough bridges to send him to a mid-table team. Whatever the case, MLS officials should worry about consistency in the stands in the present; instead of trying to pawn out their league to the most reputable names in order to make tons of dough. Only Oscar De La Hoya can do that and get away with it.
