There was once a day when Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were the preeminent fighters in boxing. Unfortunately, since then, Holyfield has danced his way to partial brain damage, and Mike Tyson has become an even crazier version of himself. Considering the last time they fought Tyson bit off a chunk of Holyfield’s ear, that’s saying a lot. So why are they talking about a rematch when they’re more freak show curiosity than legitimate contenders? Well, let’s just say facial tattoos and bail money don’t come cheap.
Holyfield, who has been the world heavyweight champion a record four times, said that Tyson had approached him, through an intermediary, to discuss a rematch after their infamous second fight in 1997 ended in disgrace. Tyson, showing unprecedented savagery, bit Holyfield twice and tore off a chunk of his ear - which he then spat to the canvas.
There has been some talk between us,” Holyfield said…. [Jeff Fenech, Tyson's trainer told Holyfield] ‘The main thing Mike wants to know is if you would be willing to fight him again?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if the price is right, I probably would’.”
Hm. How much is the prospect of losing your other ear worth? $25 million? 30? If he’s going to go Bob Barker on us, he might as well give us the number. What do you think?
