We don’t watch hockey. It’s simply a sport we were negated growing up. But we’re fascinated by the fights. The rest is as foreign to us as mayonnaise on french fries. Yet, having minimal exposure to the game, we always wondered what would happen if a player was ever severely injured, i.e. had they throat slashed. Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers provided the gruesome glimpse into what can seriously go wrong during a game.
Florida Panthers goalie Thomas Vokoun saw fear in Richard Zednik’s ashen face when his teammate reached the bench with blood gushing from his throat.
“He was very scared,” Vokoun said, describing the frightening scene after the right side of Zednik’s throat was accidentally sliced by teammate Olli Jokinen’s skate during a game at Buffalo on Sunday night. “He was conscious, I guess. His eyes were closed, but he was moving and moaning.”
Zednik is said to be in stable condition, but we don’t know how long it will be until he returns to the ice. The following video is footage from the incident.
