This deal is taking longer than a Roger Clemens’ steroid confession. Apparently the Mets and Johan Santana are still working out the kinks regarding a contract that would make the Cy Young winner the richest pitcher in baseball. It looks like Santana will definitely break Barry Zito’s $126 million mark, but we don’t know if it will be by $20 million or $45 million. Santana wants something on the fringe of $170 million, but the Mets, stingy bastards, are looking to settle for closer to $142 million. Is it suitable to gasp?

At this point, what would possibly happen if the deal fell through? Would Flushing go up in flames? Would Yankees’ fans have a parade? Would Santana sign with the Red Sox and then we’d all jump off a bridge? It’s disheartening to fathom, but no worries. Baseball executives have put us at ease.

Baseball people believe they can’t fail to sign him. “It has to get done,” one baseball executive said.
Said another exec, “The Mets can’t walk away.”

Don’t “no return, no refund” policies suck?
