Mexico Doesn’t Care Boxer Tommy Morrison Has HIV

The Association of Boxing Commissions is kind of worried about what’s going to go down in Leon, Mexico this weekend. This Saturday, Tommy Morrison is going to fight Matt Weishaar in a fight promoted by Top Rank. If you’ve shrugged and said “so what,” that’s what the ABC fears everyone in Mexico is doing because they’re letting Morrison fight even though he has tested positive for HIV. In Mexico, they don’t test for blood, so they’re turning a blind eye… to the guy fighting with HIV. They must really want to know what Stallone was like behind the scenes on Rocky V.
“The ABC is very concerned that Mr. Morrison is being allowed to participate in a boxing match,” association President Tim Lueckenhoff said of the former heavyweight champion, who was licensed to fight in West Virginia last February in his only sanctioned bout in the United States since he tested positive for HIV in 1996.
“We will encourage the Mexican Boxing Commission overseeing the match, as well as Top Rank, to present Mr. Morrison for a supervised blood draw.”
Why the blood test? They know he’s positive. What exactly would have changed about his condition since 1996? Unless Magic Johnson knows something we don’t, there hasn’t been a cure found for HIV yet, so the Mexican boxing heads and Matt Weishaar know what they’re getting themselves in to.
