There’s no better place to take a watered down version of soccer than the lovely paradise that is Honolulu, Hawaii. The Pan-Pacific Soccer Championships kick off February 20 for a two-day tournament featuring David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Houston Dynamo, Gamba Osaka of Japan and Sydney FC of Australia. The tournament, touted as being something as big as European Champions League and Copa Libertadores, is embarking on marketing scheme to bring the kind folk of Hawaii some soccer…and Beckham. Of course. Next up in Hawaii: Beckham without a hula skirt.

Like protective coaches carefully overseeing the development of a raw but promising prospect, officials are tempering their expectations for the first-ever Pan-Pacific Soccer Championships with a healthy dose of “let’s see what happens.”
Officials are hoping that the international field, combined appeal of international soccer icon David Beckham of the Galaxy and local soccer star Brian Ching of the Dynamo, will attract soccer enthusiasts and casual sports fans alike.

That really worked in the past (NASL, anyone?), so it’s sure to work now. We find it interesting that the Beckham circus world tour hasn’t included Snoop Dogg on the itinerary. Hell, why not involve celebrities in ALL the tournaments? Genius.
