Steve Nash is once again proclaiming his love affair with soccer by announcing that we will be an investor in the new Women’s Professional soccer league, which is set to debut in 2009. The new league will include Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis and Washington and an eight team is in the works. Nash disclosed in the past that he’d enjoy ownership of professional English team Tottenham Hotspur, and we find the parallel between them and a women’s league to be striking.
“I really just want to be a super fan and watch this league grow,” the Phoenix Suns star said. “If I can help spread the word and help get access to some of my fans and help this women’s league take off in this country, I’d be happy to do that.”
Furthermore, it seems oddly coincidental that this announcement emerges when one of his rival teams in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers, acquired a guy that will probably halt a Phoenix Suns’ run at the title this year. Could this be Nash’s scapegoat–a side project to defer his attention from the impending doom awaiting him in the playoffs come May? Maybe. Whatever the case, investing in a women’s professional soccer league is noble, but Phoenix should strap Nash down until the end of the season if they ever plan to win a title.
