115K Baseball Fans Watch Game That Doesn’t Count

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox broke a major league record by playing a game host to more than 115,000 fans. That’s roughly 3 billion Dodger dogs served in one game. It would have been nice to include the 50th anniversary game in the regular-season standings. There isn’t any other reason for us wanting that than seeing any given right hander smack multiple homeruns over a fence that’s 205ft away and have them count towards their season totals…

A gimpy Nomar Garciaparra, with broken finger and stressed groin muscle, could have managed a knock if a gust, or combination of farts, provided enough current. Hell, a Brian Penny super bunt could have gone over if his forearm thrust was strong enough. The point is: um, well…this should of counted as a real game. Hey, MLB could have gravitated towards some “Manager of team that was once part of the five bourroughs that make up New York City and is the ex-manager of New York City team takes on Boston…on FOX tonight!” marketing scheme, but they didn’t. Instead, the game was spurned by anyone outside of the smoggy permiter of LA County. You didn’t miss much either.
The Dodgers were walloped for five runs by the third and the Boston Red Sox never looked back. Tommy Lasorda didn’t even get to argue a play, but hey, at least Dodgers’ fans know where their team stands against a real contender. Movin’ on up.
