Bilbao Goalkeeper Armando Leveled By Bottle Thrower

We thought we’d seen it all after the raucous in Colombian soccer last week, but Spanish sports fans–constantly reminding us of their progressive ways–marred a soccer match this weekend between Real Betis and Bilbao when Bilbao goalkeeper Armando was nailed in the eyes with a bottle, bruising his socket and halting the game.
Like every similar case, this incident was senseless and unwarranted. The fan responsible was detained and probably whooped with some sort of “you can never come back to the stadium” punishment. It’s a harsh sanction, but someone should tar and feather the bastard. Armando’s eye will heal, Real Betis will suck a little more every week and we’ll all move on, but someone should institute a “no bottles” policy out there in Seville. This isn’t the first time a Real Betis fan has used a bottle as a rocket. What next: spears and blow guns?
