The Cubbies 2008 season is marred by the fact that the Centennial anniversary of their last World Series win is this year. That’s a lot of pressure. So, let’s be frank: the Cubs aren’t going to win the World Series this year. We’re only stating that to ease the pressure just that much. It’s a fact that anyone outside of Chicago can guarantee. Yet, it’s still tough when your team’s losing. And the Cubbies have always put up a good fight. But during Spring training, when it’s OK to lose, Lou Piniella isn’t going to stand for it.
“I’m getting tired of losing ballgames, even in spring training,” he said.
After pointing to positive performances from Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill and Michael Wuertz, Sweet Lou reverted to Sour Lou.
“Bad baseball ensued in the eighth inning,” he said.
Asked if the relievers were not helping their own cause, Piniella replied: “They will soon. … I’m not sure it’s going to be here.”
Hey Lou, cut the boys a little slack. It’s Spring training and no one really wants to create hype in March anyway. Take the Dodgers, for example. They’ve got Tommy Lasorda’s lardy self managing the team the last eight games in Vero Beach. Why? Because they don’t care about losing in the Spring. As long as your pitchers aren’t mugged in the regular season and Felix Pie’s testicles are fine, the Cubs should be OK. Well, not OK, but, you know, normal.
