Mexico’s love affair with their nation’s finest futbolero has gone from overzealous admiration to disappointment in a matter of months. And today, club officials from Mexico’s FMF convened to decide the fate of “Pentapichichi.” After only 16 months on the job, Mexico fired Hugo Sanchez as national soccer coach at 4:45EST ended his brief tenure as coach. His record, a detestable one, included 12 wins, 8 losses, and 3 draws over the course of 23 games. His winning percentage was a mere 52.17%. Reports from Univision note that Jesús Ramírez will be the interim head coach until a suitable replacement can be found, meaning they have no idea what the hell they are doing. An excerpt in translation:
The failure at the Olympic qualifiers was the drop that broke the vase [Ed note: So lyrical and we know it's butchered. Our apologies] and the directors decided to make a change to provide a better chance to advance to the [2010] World Cup.
Honestly, with a team as talented as Mexico, it was only a matter of time. 2005 U17 World Cup championships usually means success is awaiting you in the next few years. It’s not a guarantee, but Hugo Sanchez hardly fit the bill for the perfect leader. Yet, Ricardo La Volpe’s (Hugo Sanchez’s predecessor) didn’t make the transition easy. Let’s just hope “El Tri” don’t fumble during 2010 qualifiers.
