It’s been less than 24 hours since Hugo Sanchez and his U-23 crew derailed from Beijing Olympic 2008 contention and now Mexico’s renowned newspapers are calling for Hugo Sanchez’s head. It’s a shame considering the team, though playing well below their potential, managed to show progress. Unfortunately, no one stands for, um, fifth place.

“Hugo, have some dignity and quit. Don’t bring on any more shame.”

Easing it in there gently isn’t really how Mexico likes to do things, is it? The chorus line you’ve just read comes from Record, but Reforma proclaimed similar sentiments and have called for Sanchez to step down. Sanchez’s team concoctions haven’t shown any more promise than former coach Ricardo La Volpe’s side ever did, so the frustration is legitimate. Yet, if Mexico dunks Sanchez, then who’s to replace him? And shouldn’t they wait until the penultimate World Cup qualifiers? He was supposed to be the savior of Mexican soccer, wasn’t he?
