What better way to divert attention from your shitty life then to fantasize about playing in World Cup qualifiers for whatever team would come calling. For most of us, a Sunday league goal against an overweight, balding, double-divorcee goalie is the closest we’ll come to glory. But for Ross Jeremy, a UK resident who plays in Bristol’s District Sunday League, he’s in luck. He recently became aware that Dominica was looking for eligible foreign players to play and without hesitancy he sent the club an email. Jeremy aptly recognized he was probably eligible to play for the country because his father was born in the Dominican. Now, he’s going to be sitting front line on the bench against Barbados next week in a World Cup qualifier.

He is guaranteed at least a place on the bench for the return leg that, in the event of victory, would mean a play- off against the United States.

Which means he could soon be staring right back at Clint Dempsey’s alien-like face, and repelling rockets from Landon Donovan. Jeremy went onto describe every Sunday league soccer player’s wet dream.

“The training was amazing, not just because I was new to that level. I didn’t feel out of my depth, especially playing behind a defence so well organised compared to what I’m used to. But the power and accuracy of the shots was something I hadn’t experienced. Our keeper had a great game in the first leg but I know that I’ll be at least a sub because we are only taking a squad of 18.”

Good luck Jeremy, but look out for flying water bottles. You’re in the big time now.
