Everton striker Tim Cahill’s goal celebration has raised some controversy from people who are annoyed by goal celebrations. Cahill scored Everton’s second goal during their Premiership match today and gave a shout out to his jailbird brother by locking his wrists in a mock portrayal of being handcuffed. What happened to sucking your thumb like a baby, or hailing fans in a fascist salute? Are we done with those?
After heading his side’s second in their 3-1 win over Portsmouth, an emotional Cahill wheeled away with one wrist placed over the other as if in handcuffs.
The Australia midfielder looked close to tears and explained the goal had been dedicated to his brother Sean, jailed for six years in January after an attack that left his victim Chris Stapley partially blinded.
Frankly, we’re oblivious to the controversy, but we should point out that a reliable source has confirmed Cahill was adamant about pretending his hand was an eye patch, but decided against it once his teammates thought it would be cooler to show cuffs. Pity.
Has Everton’s Tim Cahill taken the art of goal celebration too far? [Daily Mail]
