Ever heard of the Boston Braves FC squad? Neither have we. But they are out there. And they’re comprised of dedicated soccer lovers of the 50-something variety who recenty took on another over the hill bunch in London, Chelsea’s Old Boys. The Boston Braves haven’t been that successful in the winning department (they’ve only one once since their inception in 2001), but strive to someday, get this, start a World Cup for seniors.
The Braves are the pet project of Spiros Tourkakis, a native of Greece who is now a seafood distributor in Massachusetts. His ultimate goal is the creation of a World Cup for veteran players.
“These players are the forgotten heroes,” Tourkakis said in a telephone interview after returning from Europe. “When they played, they played for the shirt, not only for the money. In today’s world it is very different. We have seen it in so many places we have played — men with tears in their eyes; 20 years later we brought some light back to them.”
Is it a possibility the men have tears in their eyes because they payed to watch a real soccer game and were duped into watching elders? We kids. But, seriously. Evo Morales says, “Bring it on.”
