Joe Girardi Bans Ice Cream From Clubhouse So Yankees Won’t Be The Biggest Loser

At this time of the year, when the sun begins to come out and the children start to play, the freezer (and the treats that lie within) becomes our friend. Leave it to new Yankees manager Joe Girardi to channel his new boss Hal Steinbrenner’s grumpiness and ban all the ice cream and sweets from his clubhouse. He’s even calling stadiums ahead of time to get freezers like this upturned and taped up like a mob rat from The Sopranos. From what we understand, they call it “the Bronx special.”
The Yankees contacted the visiting clubhouse manager of every stadium where they play and asked that the candy and ice cream be removed before the team comes to town.
All clubhouses have an assortment of candy, gum, sunflower seeds, ice cream and other goodies. Personally, it never has made sense to me. Why would you provide professional athletes with junk food? The players, of course, aren’t too pleased. They’re used to M&Ms and Snickers bars.
We don’t know what the big hubbub is–look at Prince Fielder. The guy hit 50 home runs last year at like 300 pounds. This year, on his new vegetarian diet, he’s on pace to hit 14. Let the guys eat… well, except Joba Chamberlain. When you remind people of Spalding from Caddyshack, you need to put the fun-sized Butterfingers down.
