It was only a matter of time until a big shot member of the patriarchal racing machine known as Formula One would step up and denounce–in any way, shape or for–Danica Patrick’s historical victory in the Japan Indy Car 500. Because, if women would ever want to participate in F1 racing, they’d better think twice considering they’re too weak to make split second decisions and turn a steering wheel left and right. Pedro De La Rosa, would you please step up to the pulpit.
“There are less and less obstacles because there are now many women in kart racing … The base of the pyramid is expanding … I would be delighted to see it happen sooner or later, but it is more difficult for women because of the important physical elements of racing in Formula One…”
Two words: Gwendolyn Hertzberger. She’s a Dutch racing heiress who has featured in the top ten in numerous races abroad and at the ripe age of 19, she made her first full season debut in Formula One. It’s up to debate whether she’ll ever win a race, but Mr. De La Rosa should indulge in an hour of wikipedian fun before his chauvinism blinds him from the truth. A glimpse of Ms. Hertzberger below.
