Immediate reports from the New York Daily News implied that New York Rangers hockey stud Sean Avery was on his deathbed, “not-breathing”, suffered cardiac arrest and was grappling to shun away death at St. Vincent’s hospital in New York City. (Down on page views, are we?) Sean Avery was admitted to the hospital with a lacerated spleen suffered in a playoff game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the whole “life-threatening” thing was embellished quite a bit. Says the AP report that throws a punch at the Daily News:

Rosasco said it’s unclear when Avery was injured, but the forward complained during the game of pain that got worse. Following the game, Avery went in a car from Madison Square Garden to the hospital with team physician Dr. Andrew Feldman.
“He walked into the hospital,” Rosasco said. “He was never in a life-threatening situation.”
Avery’s mother, Marlene, told the Toronto Sun that Avery’s spleen had not ruptured, but he had suffered internal bleeding.

OK. Internal bleeding does sound really serious, but was it enough for this?

The Daily News first reported on its Web site Wednesday morning that Avery was taken to St. Vincent’s in cardiac arrest. The newspaper said he was unconscious and not breathing when taken to the hospital.

Even Deadspin was spooked by the post. (Hey guys! Hello! Wahooo!)
There are also reports that during an operation intended to save his life, an angelic voice sprang forth from the bowels of his, um, bowels and professed that Sean Avery is not the father of modern hockey. All the nurses and doctors laughed. It was great.
