No one from the British guidebook committee told Masai warriors that a ceremonial strapping on a leg would impede their progression in the race if applied too tightly. Of course, they offered recommendations on where not to piss and shit, but alas, the leader of the Masai marathoners, Isaya, had to end his trek abruptly on Sunday because he inadvertently cut off circulation to his leg during the race. No worries. His buddy Taico went with him to the hospital and the two returned to the route Tuesday in order to finish the race.
The pair were forced to abandon the race and the four other Maasai [sic] in their group after 13 miles on Sunday when Isaya, the leader of the group, fell sick because a ceremonial strapping on his leg had been too tight and affected his circulation.
While Ngovu, Lengami, Ninna and Kesika finished the marathon in 5hr 24min 47sec, Isaya was taken to hospital accompanied by Taico for moral support.
Fully recovered from his ordeal, Isaya was all smiles as he crossed the line yesterday. He said: “It was very important for me to do this. This is what I came to England for.”
The Maasai return to northern Tanzania today, hoping that they will have raised the £60,000 they need to install bore holes and pumps that will bring fresh water to their village of Eluai.
Just like civilized human beings. No one ever guessed that would happen, ey Brits? You know, integrity is an innate trait. Well, we believe that at least. Congrats Masai. Is there anyway you’ll come to the States?
