Buzz Bissinger And Will Leitch Toe-To-Toe On “Costas Now”

Deadspin editor and founder Will Leitch was a guest of Bob Costas’ HBO show “Costas Now” on Tuesday night and had a sit down with journalist Buzz Bissinger to chat about the state of blogging and it’s formidable presence as a source for information. Um, Buzz is really angry at bloggers. From the start, Buzz tackled Will with the grotesque profanity that he suggests ALL blogs wield. Let’s be clear: we blog for a living with the intent to inform, entertain and distract you from your day jobs. It’s a privileged position and we don’t take it for granted. But his argument that all blogs are disgusting is misguided and blatantly obtuse.
Besides the sheer negligence Buzz declared for, what we would call, avant-garde journalism, the tactics Deadspin and numerous other blogs cherish are hardly novel. Dadaists decided to piss off artists in the early 20th century by releasing “art for the sake of art” in a profane and vulgar manner; and maybe blogs are in some way parallel. The fact remains that people like Buzz feel threatened. So much so that they are willing to generalize the realm of blogs as untraditional, vulgar and indecent. Maybe we are, but so was Jean-Michel Basquiat…and we love him.
