It may seem, at times, that we’re a bit harsh on the Argentines when it comes to soccer. Well it’s true. But we’d still watch any Argentine club or national team over the Italians. There is simply no excuse to ever watch, or root for, the Italians. Which is odd because most Argentines salute their Italian heritage. Rants. Anyway, news coming out of London implies that Argentina had a little help in their 1978 World Cup campaign, and it had absolutely nothing to do with any hands of God, but had plenty to do with the hands of cocaine shlepping Colombians.
The son of an infamous drug lord nicknamed ‘The Chess Player’ claims certain family members paid Peru players to lose against the hosts.
Argentina won 6-0 and ensured their place in the final by finishing above group rivals Brazil on goal difference and went on to beat Holland 3-1 to clinch their first world title.
Fernando Rodriguez, who will reveal more details in a book about his father Gilberto RodrÃguez Orejuela, said: “We have photos and statements emerging in the book, the full story of how the deal was done.”
Hey, we believe it. We’re sold. But rather than rag on the Argentines, why the hell did Peru, in the hypothetical here fellas, take a bribe? Didn’t they have something to gain by beating the Argentines? Put down that guinea pig and talk to us, Peru!
