Oscar De La Hoya’s farewell from boxing later this year will culminate with a seven-foot statue of the “Golden Boy” erected outside of Staples Center in Los Angeles. It’s a fitting tribute to someone that has given so much back to the world of competitive boxing in Los Angeles.
The date of unveiling is pending, a Staples Center spokesman said, but De La Hoya was surprised by the announcement, made by his Golden Boy Promotions business partner Richard Schaefer at a downtown news conference promoting De La Hoya’s fight against Steve Forbes on Saturday at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
“I’m going to drive by it every day,” De La Hoya said.
How long do you suppose it’ll be before a graffiti artist paints a mustache on his face? Or before some handy stencilist will glaze the statue with an overlaying drawing of mesh? Will he be wearing Mexican trunks, or America trunks? Or both? As former Angelenos, we recommend they position the statue atop steps so we can sprint up stairs, valiantly, with arms stretching towards the heavens, inundated in victory and a glossy smirk smeared across our faces. Eat your heart out, Philadelphia.
