There’s controversy brewing around Gabriel Saez. He’s the jockey that was riding second place Kentucky Derby horse “Eight Belles” and he’s been accused of cracking the whip excessively after it appeared that the horse was in trouble during the race.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has called for the suspension and investigation of Eight Belles jockey Gabriel Saez, and also has started an online petition to change the rules of thoroughbred racing.
The group also wants Eight Belles jockey Saez questioned.
“What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?” PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. “If he didn’t, then we can probably blame the fact that they’re allowed to whip the horses mercilessly.”
We watched the race and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, but we’re no experts. Also, we thought you could whip the daylights out of the horse when you wanted it to go faster. Obviously, we’ve been misinformed. If Gabriel was negligent to Eight Belles’ condition, then he should be held accountable for…something. Not the horses’ death though. Those ankles were going to break that day with anyone strapped in the saddle because, let’s remember, Hillary Clinton bet on the poor filly. Thoughts?
