Vin Scully Will Not Retire, But Will…Someday

It’s Friday and we’re sentimental. Maybe it’s the ominous clouds over New York City that are waiting to unload a wave of rain later today; or maybe it’s the fact that we forgot to bring our iPod to the office and all we have on our hard drive is John Coltrane. It didn’t help that Bill Plaschke from the Los Angeles Times has to bring up the inevitable reality that the Los Angeles Dodgers treasured voice, Vin Scully, is contemplating retirement. From his column this morning:
“Are you retiring?”
I hated to ask it, because, goodness, I didn’t want to put any ideas into his forever-red head, but I didn’t have a choice.
This week, for the first time in, oh, about 59 years, Scully did not rule it out.
Ok. Is there a way to get Vin to record musings, phrases, epithets and stories for games to be played for the next two decades? Just an idea.
“Are you retiring?”
He sighed. He said that print interviews sometimes fail to capture the proper tone in someone’s voice.
“There’s a lot of hoopla in this job, but it’s lonely for the wife,” he told the New York Times during an appearance in Manhattan. “So I want to talk seriously with [Sandy] about her feelings, I want to know what’s in her head. We’ll talk it out over the long summer and then we’ll talk to Frank” McCourt…”
“[The quote] came out a little heavy handed, and it really wasn’t like that,” Scully said.
“So, um, ah, are you retiring?”
Scully sighed again.
“It’s not the end, I believe, or anything like that,” he said.
I wish you could have answered my phone, then seen me toss it high in the air with relief.
It’s a relief to know that Vin isn’t going to retire today. And he probably won’t retire next year. If all goes well with Frank McCourt and contract negotiations, we could hear Vin Scully for 81 games a season for the next five years. We’re crossing our fingers because we’d hate to return to Los Angeles and hear anyone else but Vin; unless, of course, it’s Jaime Jarrin. Us bilinguals and our surplus of awesome sportscasters. We hope it never ends.
