Omar Minaya is one inefficient GM. Under the cover of night, the Mets front office general flew to California yesterday and axed his manager Willie Randolph and two coaches after their win against the Angels. At 3 AM New York time. Why didn’t he do it three days ago when everyone was back in Queens? Something tells us Minaya wanted to do it in the biggest jerk way possible after Randolph screwed up last year’s NL East lead and this year’s millions on Johan Santana.

Minaya, who had flown to California during the game, delivered the news to Randolph, Peterson and Nieto when they arrived at the team hotel. Why Minaya allowed all three to make the long trip to California instead of firing them in New York on Sunday made the timing all the more baffling.

The axing of Randolph… came less than a week after Minaya told reporters that Randolph had the support of team ownership and less than a month after Randolph kept his job following a dramatic May 26 meeting with Minaya and owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon at Shea Stadium.

Yeah, the dreaded “vote of confidence” from the front office never bodes well. You might as well update your resume when you get one of those.
