13 year old Sameer Mishra became the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion after spelling “guerdon” correctly. But the kid should get a medal for comedic proficiency after bringing down the house with one misheard word: numbnut. That’s not the word judges gave him. But you and I, and everyone else watching the broadcast (yeah, we REALLY did watch), heard the word “numnah” sound more like “numbnut.” You can even hear the giggling murmur of the announcers say, “Did he just call me numbnuts? What?!” Cue Sameer, the coolest spelling bee kid ever, pronouncing the word numbnut on national television.
