Peru’s national soccer team usually has a little more grunt than what they displayed against Mexico last Sunday. But you can’t help it sometimes. Mexico came off a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Argentina days earlier, and their next opponents, whomever it were to be, were going to suffer a demolishing the likes of Kobe Bryant after an under 20 point performance. Just don’t try explaining that to Peruvian fans.
A video clip on the Web site of El Comercio on Tuesday showed the players filing out of the arrivals hall at Lima airport under a chorus of whistles and insults after arriving late on Monday night.
President Garcia joined the criticism when he told reporters: ‘It was a disgrace, let me cover my face. Terrible, terrible.’
Yes, covering your face is crucial when people start throwing jeers. Because what’s after jeers, you ask? Well there’s bottles, rocks, shoes, tomatoes, guinea pigs, spit and then bullets. They’re all lucky everyone left with limbs intact…and alive.
